“My soul is in Trieste” James Joyce (Letter to Nora october 27th 1909)
A unique city where three different European cultures converge. An elegant and comfortable city of open minds and wide horizons. Two hours drive take us to Trieste. First stop at the Miramare Castle where we meet the guide. The castle is surrounded by a flourishing park full of precious botanic species and has a charming panoramic view, due to its location on a cliff high above the sea. It stands on the peak of the rocky promontory in the Gulf of Trieste, and is about 10 km from the city. The castle offers today’s visitors an example of a luxurious aristocratic residence which has preserved its original furnishings. (entrances in the castle at your own). We move on and reach Trieste! Feel its historical and architectural soul of the city. Almost every square, corner, building, cafè and museum has something to say. Roman Tergeste was built on the hill of San Giusto where there are the ruins of the Forum, the ancient Basilica and the Tempio. The city tour includes the Borgo teresiano with the Canal Grande, the neo-classical church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo and the Serbo-Orthodox church of San Spiridione. The happy co-existence of these two churches is a reminder of the old spirit of tolerance. Piazza Verdi, which hosts Teatro Verdi with an important opera season whose tradition goes back to the beginning of the 19th century and Piazza Unità d’Italia. This great square, the heart of the city life, is an enormous space overlooking the sea and surrounded on three sides by splendid buildings.
